Human Touch 2.0 – Essentialism and Emotional Durability
The idea of the human touch extends into a concept I explored during my studies: essentialism. This psychological theory posits that we often perceive objects and art as possessing an intrinsic essence, beyond their physical properties. Consider two identical art pieces—one labeled as the "original," the other a copy. Despite being physically identical, the "original" carries a perceived essence, altering its value and emotional impact.
This essentialism can have profound implications for sustainability. When we imbue objects with meaning—whether through creation, personalization, or their stories—we value them more and treat them with greater care. Such emotional durability counters our disposable culture, promoting a more thoughtful approach to consumption.
In my own work, I strive to embed this essence into every piece. By fostering deeper connections with the objects we surround ourselves with, we not only enrich our lives but also contribute to a more sustainable future.
